In 1896, Water Street Station (presently known as the Toledo Edison Steam Plant) was commissioned to be built by renowned architect Daniel Burnham. Echo is a large scale sculpture that reclaimed steel from the original smokestacks into an interactive work of art in Promenade Park. The piece represents the echo of a sound returned from its destination. It is a reverberating reminder of Toledo’s first energy center and its resounding impact on the Toledo community.
Once a towering piece of metal sitting atop the steam plant, Echo’s 11 rings now integrate into the landscape creating a walking path that serves as a metaphor for Toledo's transition from past to present to future. As the colors shift from black to blue to white, the sculpture reminds us of The Steam Plant’s previous life, when it transformed coal to steam to electric energy and energized a city. The artists use the repeated circle forms as symbols of cycles of time and perpetual motion.
Echo was designed and built by artists, Kristine Rumman and Dane Turpening.
