What does it be at home? To become a local?
In pursuit of this question, I came across the writings of Dr. Ruzy Suliza Hashim and Dr. Nor Faridah Abdul Manaf. Hashim, a professor of language studies at the National Museum of Malaysia and Manaf, a professor of postcolonial literature at The International Islamic University Malaysia, remark,“traditionally, a home is conceptualized as a stable, physical centre of a person’s private space, a place where one feels belonged and loved. Yet, both the garment that keeps the body private and the home that keeps one safe no longer protect the individual” (550). This can be applicable in the experience of living in exile or for those whom experience the echo effects of diaspora, and thus can be exemplified in the work of many artists from the Middle East.
Park McArthur Amoungst many other concerns, the Parks Essex Street project examines the experience of access or belonging and creates the possiblility for viewers to examine thier own personal relationship to accessibility.
